In less than a month and a half, Youngstown State University’s search committee has settled on a presidential nominee… Josh Medore with the News Outlet brings us the story. After a 14-year hiatus, Jim Tressel returns to the campus of Youngstown State University – and, this time, as its president.
Students on campus express mixed emotions about the National Championship winning coach coming back to lead the university.
ALANA LESANSKI: I think it will be good because he is invested in the valley and I think that’s what this university needs.
JONATHAN POHL: I know there are some concerns. He doesn’t have a PhD, right? But my opinion about that is as along as he has experience leading and once again being invested in the university that’s what’s more important than the formality of a PhD.
Tressel lead YSU’s football team to four national championships as head coach before leaving for Ohio State University in 2000.
In May of 2011, Tressel resigned as the head coach at OSU after a controversy where players exchanged memorabilia for tattoos, an NCAA violation.
YSU Chairman of the Board Sudershan Garg says that the controversy will not affect his job as president. These are his words:“Nobody is perfect and has a completely clean slate. As long as you acknowledge and move on, we have to look at the positive strengths and aspects of an individual.”
In 2012, Tressel began working for The University of Akron.
When Randy Dunn left the YSU Presidency to take on the same job at Southern Illinois, local community leaders endorsed Tressel for the presidency.
Tressel is expected to sign his YSU contract next week.
